Fondue originates in the Western Alps – the French-speaking part of Switzerland, Savoy in France, and Piedmont and the Aosta Valley in Italy.
The word fondue comes from the French: «fondre» = melt, «fondu» = molten.
It is thought that fondue was invented by monks as a food that could circumvent fasting rules.
The cheese variety is the original fondue.
The earliest known published recipe dates back to 1699.
The world’s largest fondue contained 922.5 kilograms of cheese!
