  • Fondue originates in the Western Alps – the French-speaking part of Switzerland, Savoy in France, and Piedmont and the Aosta Valley in Italy.

  • The word fondue comes from the French: «fondre» = melt, «fondu» = molten.

  • It is thought that fondue was invented by monks as a food that could circumvent fasting rules.

  • The cheese variety is the original fondue.

  • The earliest known published recipe dates back to 1699.
